River travel is a traditional way of voyaging that is very much back in fashion these days. And in the US, Mississippi cruises are amongst the better places for this kind of travel, regardless of whether you just have a day or a weekend for a short trip, or can afford to take a weeks-long vacation.

There are loads of different things that one can do on a cruise on a river as varied as the Mississippi, and this is reflected in the great number of options that exist for Mississippi cruises. Whether for a day or for a whole month, you’ll never be bored.

Mississippi cruises take place on a river that flows through very different areas, from the Rocky Mountains of the US north, in Minnesota, through the great American plains, to the steaming mangrove swamps of Louisiana, passing by several interesting urban areas as well as unspoiled natural environments.

A Mississippi cruise can be in an old fashioned steamboat that will bring you back to the nineteenth century, or it can be in a modern, opulent cruise ship that offers state-of-the-art extravagance.

There is not dearth of activities on a Mississippi cruise, and these include swimming going to a spa, gambling, visiting the local towns, experiencing river nature, high quality gastronomy, clubbing and so on.

Often Mississippi cruises are used to organize specific happenings, such as a high school reunion, a marriage celebration or a business event. If you are planning to organize such an event, your guests will be delighted and will assuredly hold the experience forever in their memories.

Even normal cruises where you just book a coupe of places often have themes. That is, they are mainly dedicated to the exploration of a singe subject, such as jazz and bluegrass music, or Cajun culture and cuisine. If you have a specific interest, chances are that you’ll find something for you.

The principal ports of departure and arrival are New Orleans, Memphis, Chattanooga, St. Louis, Galveston and Pittsburgh. A Mississippi cruise can be either a round-trip or just one way, between two ports of call.

The outlay for a Mississippi cruise can vary a lot, depending on some obvious factors such as the length of the cruise and the level of comfort, but also on the position of the cabin relative to the ship, and on the extras that are part of the package.

The Internet has a wealth of information and tips on how to find the perfect river voyage for you. Once you have all the information you need, you will find a wealth of options at travel agencies, either online or directly at the agents’ or cruise lines’ offices.

Few things are as wonderful as a trip down a river, especially so on the amazing Mississippi and its tributaries.

When deciding on a Mississippi cruise, you have a series of different alternatives. Besides the obvious ones, such as length and itinerary, you should also spare a thought to whether you want a historical or themed trip, and on if you prefer spending time in towns and cities, or in the unspoilt countryside.

If you like history, you will enjoy a trip on a traditional paddleboat, which usually comes with live entertainment that has a 200 year old tradition. Paddleboats usually travel on fixed schedules and dock at the region’s most famous cities, such as New Orleans or St. Louis, so that the passengers may indulge in some sightseeing.

There are several paddleboats plying the Mississippi, but the most well-known ones for cruises are the Mississippi Queen, the delta Queen and the American Queen.

Other themed cruises may still have a historical facet, but are more specific. For instance, they could be about the area’s musical heritage, or about civil War sites

Alternatives are many – whether you want to explore the customs of the regions’ Native American inhabitants, or learn some Bluegrass, you will not be disappointed.

On almost all cruises, helpful guides will be available to brief you about the sights and make sure that you will enjoy the experience to the fullest.

A Mississippi cruise can be playground to all sorts of different people. Whether you are travelling alone, with spouse and kids, as a couple or with friends, you will be able to secure a trip that is just right for your party.

A Mississippi cruise during the autumn is perfect to discover the changes in nature at a more intimate pace, such as the impressive variety in leaf coloring. You will enjoy the foods of the season, which will include roasted game, apple cider and pumpkin pie. Usually there are onboard talks or that will help you understand and identify the plants and animals surrounding you.

Regardless of the season and of the theme that you will choose, you will find that there is something amongst the bends of the Mississippi that will feel just right for you. Alternatives abound!
