The mountains, seas filled with blue whales, emperor penguins and leopard seals of Antarctica are all protected to preserve wildlife with an international agreement. This pristine ecosystem has been protected from mining and oil drilling since 1998 and will stay protected for at least 50 years. It has been agreed that this continent be used for conservation and science, not for development. Very few things that would be a danger to the wildlife here are allowed. This means that everything from pesticides to dogs are banned.

The agreement that sets all these rules it the Environmental Protection Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty. This agreement has been set by the nations of the world to keep Antarctica free of commercialism and industrial development. The treaty was approved in 1991 by 26 leading nations including the United States, Russia, China, India, Japan, Argentina, Brazil and most major European countries who had interests in the area.

The treaty stopped the arguing that was going on for more than 15 years about regulating the area. The rules said that the 35 scientific outposts had to clean their dumps and pick up their garbage and oil and mining was banned. Postal code and route mapping in Canada is a little different from that of the States. In fact, they are undergoing a change in the way they handle their street addresses. One example of this, is in the Burlington area. Most of this area is a part of Rural Route #2 Milton, and Rural Route #6 Milton, and then still Rural Route #3 Campbellville for their mail delivery.

But, while this is true, these areas all still have an address that is a Burlington street address. This fact has caused many to suffer having their mail incorrectly reflect them living in the wrong location. It has made delivery very difficult and confusing. It has also been the cause of loss of access to emergency services. So they decided to change the postal identifier to Burlington so the rural areas will get the same type of mail delivery as everyone else in Burlington.

They began the process of fixing this problem in 2005. Local counselors and Parliament members met with people from the Canada Post and work on a solution to this confusing problem. They had to create brand new postal codes for the rural areas within the Burlington system. Their proposal for their solution did not get approved until 2009.  Read more...

The intriguing country of Ireland has been a popular gay vacations since the days when Oscar Wilde called this nation home. Of course, during his time Ireland was not as welcoming and accepting of LGBT folks and many, including Wilde, were jailed or sent off to hard labor camps for what was then termed “indecency.” Sadly, up until 1861, death was considered an acceptable punishment for acts of sodomy, but today Ireland has moved well beyond these dark days and has recently bested the U.S. when it comes to LGBT rights by legalizing same-sex civil unions in 2009, after decriminalizing same-sex behaviors in 1993.

While these significant legal strides might not mean that every village – or even every larger city – is ready to fully embrace same-sex relationships, Ireland has become a rather welcoming country for the most part and is a wonderful choice for gay travel. You hardly ever see sash windows out here where I live in the tropics of Africa, only in some of the very old house that have been kept meticulously preserved, and I miss them. I grew up a good deal in my grandma’s Yorkshire home, where everyone had these windows and they feature big in London architecture too. You can maintain these historic architectural features by using sash window repairs in London.

You can learn a lot from the architectural features of a city and as sash windows feature so prominently in historical buildings, it is very important to preserve them. I have very sentimental memories of looking through and at these windows and loving them. Chiefly because it didn’t take much effort to be able to see through them and they let in a lot of light.
